Research and Experiential Learning Seminar Program – Call for Proposals, 2021-22 Academic Year
I am pleased to announce the Research and Experiential Learning Seminar Program for the 2021-22 academic year. This new format of undergraduate seminar program contributes to UC San Diego’s undergraduate mission by expanding undergraduate education offerings and providing students with the opportunity to learn how to participate in mentored experiential learning opportunities with faculty.
This Seminar Program is designed to introduce students to out-of-classroom and cross-disciplinary opportunities afforded to students in different disciplines. The goal is for faculty to communicate how to identify opportunities for immersive learning available through their disciplines. Through discussion and practical exercises, students learn how to become involved in faculty-mentored experiences. Topics may include sound research principles, emerging research or application areas, out of classroom experiential activities, research group functions, faculty mentors, and project proposals. Faculty may also use this opportunity to discuss challenges and personal and professional growth opportunities arising from collaborative, immersive experiences, and the value of such growth to future careers.
For teaching a one-unit Research and Experiential Learning Seminar, eligible faculty will receive a $1,000 in research funds (available to support various academic expenses including research, travel, and supplies). These seminars are open to students from any year; they are ideally suited to students who have not had prior research or experiential learning opportunities. A primary goal is to prepare students to apply to the Triton Research and Experiential Learning Scholars (TRELS) program and other Academic Enrichment programs.
Incoming students are particularly interested in taking undergraduate seminars during the fall. I especially encourage you to consider offering a seminar during this time when demand is the highest. The due date for submission of proposals for Fall Quarter 2021 Research and Experiential Learning is Friday, March 5, 2021.
Your participation in these programs is greatly appreciated. Undergraduate seminar programs have been very well received and are important to our students. You can visit the program website for detailed information. Please contact John Moore, Dean of Undergraduate Education (due@ucsd.edu), or Leslie Carver, Provost for Marshall College (ljcarver@ucsd.edu) with questions or comments.
