ALL STUDENTS, ACADEMICS, AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO (Including UC San Diego Health)
Welcome to Winter Quarter
Whether you are studying or working on campus or remotely, I bid you a warm Triton welcome to Winter Quarter 2021.
As we begin a new year, I can’t help but reflect on the key takeaway from last year. Our Triton community rose to the challenge of our times and performed exceedingly well under complex and difficult circumstances. Because of our work together, our campus received many accolades that recognized our success in accomplishing trailblazing research with wide-ranging societal impact and in providing a diverse array of students an excellent education and opportunities for personal and professional growth.
While we have left 2020 behind us, some of the issues that surfaced last year are still with us. We must be hopeful for what 2021 brings us while remaining aware of the issues that we must continue to address. I am personally very hopeful and optimistic for what lies ahead for UC San Diego and for our Triton community.
The level of hope and renewal the vaccine brings is encouraging. As the vaccinations continue to roll out, I encourage you and everyone who is part of the university to get vaccinated to protect the health and well-being of us as individuals and also of our shared community. UC San Diego Health began administering the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine last month to thousands of frontline and essential workers at UC San Diego.
While we all await large-scale and broad-based vaccine distribution, it is important to continue the practices that have kept our campus community safe. Complete your daily screening. Wear your masks. Keep a safe physical distance. Use CA Notify mobile technology. Test weekly. And continue to act with care and compassion for others and yourself.
Another challenge that requires our attention in the new year is recognizing and actively addressing institutional racism. There is much we can do in our everyday lives to play our part. To learn more about what you can do in your everyday work, participate in the self-guided Chancellor’s 21-Day Anti-Racism Challenge and get involved in future anti-racism programming. Plans to build upon and extend the success of our existing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts will be shared in the weeks and months ahead.
One of UC San Diego’s strategic goals is to cultivate a diverse and inclusive university community that encourages respectful open dialogue, and challenges itself to take bold actions. We remain committed to achieving this goal.
Let us create conditions that will enable every member of our campus to flourish.
UC San Diego is unequivocally committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. We value every member of our community and actively work to cultivate a diverse and inclusive campus that encourages respectful open dialogue. We recognize that California’s openness to diverse perspectives and ideas has been its source of strength, innovation and global economic impact. Our openness has driven revolutionary accomplishments that have improved the lives of billions across the planet. UC San Diego seeks to continue to inspire and propel such accomplishments in the future.
I’m looking forward to continuing our work together to improve and extend the influence and impact of UC San Diego as we continue to address society’s most pressing issues. Together, we can be changemakers. Together, we will make a difference on our campus and in our greater communities.
