Updates from Human Resources
Looking to get more engaged in our Triton community? There are a number of opportunities coming up this month to celebrate and connect, including events and activities for the Staff Celebration and Homecoming. The UC San Diego campus community is also recognizing Latinx Heritage Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month with special events and programming.  

Whether you are working remotely, on-site or you have a hybrid schedule, there’s something for everyone, from virtual karaoke to pop-up events on campus where you can grab a coffee or a treat. Read on to learn more.  

Staff Celebration  

The Staff Celebration is one of UC San Diego’s signature staff appreciation events. Hosted by the Staff Association and the Office of the Chancellor, the annual tradition is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on staff and celebrate the many ways staff contribute to UC San Diego’s mission.  

This year, the Staff Association is hosting a series of virtual and in-person events to celebrate staff. Here are some ways you can get involved in the coming weeks. Visit the Staff Association website for the full schedule of events. 
  • Celebrate from anywhere:
  • Jam out at Virtual Triton Karaoke on Friday, October 15 from 12 - 1 p.m. Register or sign up to perform. 
  • Say cheese with your team or colleagues at our Virtual Photo Booth on Wednesday, October 20 from 11:30 a.m. -  2 p.m. 
  • Celebrate on campus:
  • Grab a snack at Triton Treats. The Staff Association distributed cold brew and donuts at Ridge Walk this morning and will be handing out ice cream treats in Town Square on Thursday, October 14 from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Registration for Triton Treats is not required.
  • Explore North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood at Taste of the Neighborhood on Tuesday, October 19 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Visit booths around this exciting new area of campus to get stamps on your game card. Redeem your stamps for prizes and to enter in our prize drawing. Learn more and register for Taste of the Neighborhood.
  • Show off your Triton spirit during and cheer for the UC San Diego women’s soccer team at Staff Appreciation Night on Thursday, October 21 at 6 p.m. Learn more about events during Homecoming.
Latinx Heritage Month  

Latinx Heritage Month, nationally known as Hispanic Heritage Month (Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana), is observed by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of those with ancestry in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. This year’s national theme is “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.” It is an opportunity to reflect on resilience and hope as well as honor the contributions Latinx/Chicanx people have made and continue to make to the United States.  

There are events throughout the month to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month at UC San Diego, including film screenings, art exhibits, musical performances and more. Highlights include a concert featuring Grammy Award-winning group La Santa Cecilia, Drag Lotería at the Raza Resource Centro, and the Latinx Heritage Month Commemoration Event with keynote speaker and celebrated community organizer and activist Rosa Clemente. On the Horizon: Dates and Deadlines
Chancellor’s Lunchbox Club: Chancellor Khosla invites you to enter for a chance to join him and nine other randomly selected staff members on Wednesday, November 10 from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Chancellor’s Complex Patio for a casual lunch, conversation and a one-of-a-kind lunchbox. Click here to enter for a chance to participate. The deadline to enter the drawing is Wednesday, October 20.
Vaccine Town Hall (Spanish Language):  A Spanish-language Vaccine Town Hall will be hosted on Thursday, October 21 at 11:30 a.m. featuring leaders from UC San Diego Health providing information about the COVID-19 vaccine. Please share information about this event with Spanish-speaking colleagues and campus community members. Learn more on the Return to Learn website.   

Disability + Creatives Panel Discussion: October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. UC San Diego is proud to host events each year that shine a spotlight on the value of our diverse workforce.  Join us for the Disability + Creatives event on Thursday, October 21 from 12 - 1 p.m. for a virtual panel discussion with UC creatives who use the arts and creative forms to build awareness about the experience of those living with disabilities. Staff Town Hall: Our next Staff Town Hall is slated for Wednesday, October 27 at 2 p.m. These monthly forums are a great opportunity to come together as a UC San Diego staff community for news and updates. Our panel of campus and health experts will be on hand to answer your questions about COVID-19, vaccines, campus health and safety guidelines, returning to on-site work and other important topics to staff. This month’s event will also include a presentation about Open Enrollment. Register and submit your questions today.  

Open Enrollment: Open Enrollment is a window during which employees and retirees may change their coverage or add eligible dependents onto their health insurance. Open Enrollment opens on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 8 a.m. (PST) and ends on Friday, November 19, 2021 at 5 p.m. (PST). All changes are effective January 1, 2022. More details will be shared in the coming weeks.  

Inclusive Excellence Award Nominations: Each year the Inclusive Excellence Awards recognize staff, academics, students, departments, and organizational units or groups for their leadership in and strong commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion at UC San Diego. Nominations must be submitted by Monday, November 1. To learn about nomination criteria and previous recipients, and to submit nominations, visit the Inclusive Excellence Awards website.
