ALL STUDENTS, ACADEMICS AND STAFF AT UC SAN DIEGO (Including UC San Diego Health)
Native American Heritage Month Celebration
This November, UC San Diego will celebrate the rich cultures, traditions and histories of Native people and recognize the important contributions they continue to make. All faculty, staff and students are invited to take part in Native American Heritage Month, which includes film screenings, lectures, a musical performance and more.
UC San Diego’s 15th annual festivities kick off on Nov. 4 with a free hybrid event featuring a keynote talk by Kali “KO Mequinonoag” Reis. A Native American and Cape Verdean professional boxer from the Cherokee, Nipmuc and Seaconke Wampanoag tribes, Reis is an outspoken advocate for Native American rights and continuously strives to utilize her knowledge and status to educate those around her to elevate Native voices.
The event will also include a live performance by Paul Cannon, a singer/songwriter from the San Pasqual Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. Cannon is a member of the acoustic group, Iron Sage Wood, representing the heart and soul of Southern California. Learn more and register for this free event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Price Center Ballroom.
In recognition of this month-long celebration, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved so that employees may participate in UC San Diego’s Native American Heritage Month celebration events. Supervisors are asked to allow employees to attend, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
Thank you to the members of the Native American Heritage Month Planning Committee for their time in coordinating these educational and celebratory events.
