Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce that Distinguished Professor of Music and Conrad Prebys Presidential Chair Rand Steiger has agreed to serve as the Interim Advisor on Art Strategy and Engagement. Professor Steiger has had a distinguished career as a composer of innovative orchestral, chamber and installation works that combine traditional instruments with real-time digital signal processing techniques. His collaborations have included commissions from the American Composers Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, Southbank Sinfonia, International Contemporary Ensemble, and Ensemble Intercontemporain. A former Guggenheim, Rome Prize, and N.E.A. Fellow, he has also served as Visiting Professor at Harvard, and as Calit2 Composer-in-Residence.
In addition to his wealth of experience as an accomplished artist, Professor Steiger has been both an educator and academic administrator, having served as Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities and as Chair of the Music Department, where he played a vital role in the development of the Conrad Prebys Music Center.
The Interim Advisor to the EVC on Art Strategy and Engagement will bring a new level of purpose, focus, and drive toward efforts to elevate the visibility and impact of the arts at UC San Diego. In this role, Professor Steiger will advise the Chancellor, through his work with the EVC and the Arts Strategy Advisory Group, on non-curricular matters pertaining to the visual, creative, and performing arts; partner with a wide range of campus colleagues to explore new opportunities; and lend his leadership as we collaboratively develop an inclusive campus strategy for the arts with internal and external stakeholders.
It is my hope that, with Professor Steiger’s guidance and partnership, we will bring new attention, and larger and more diverse audiences to the incredible visual and performing arts offerings on our campus, solidifying the strength of our art ecosystem and further establishing UC San Diego as an arts destination.
We are extremely fortunate to have Professor Steiger’s leadership, creativity and expertise as our campus moves into an era of new possibilities. With the reopening of the Mandeville Art Gallery, the opening of the performance and exhibition spaces in UC San Diego @ Park and Market, the creation of the Epstein Family Amphitheater, and the arrival of light rail service, it is going to be an exciting time for the arts. Chancellor Khosla and I look forward to working with Professor Steiger in this new role.
Sincerely,
