This is an incredibly exciting time at UC San Diego as we undertake various efforts to intentionally create a more inclusive campus community that better reflects the dynamic demographics of our state.
To help achieve our goal of becoming a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), as well as a model STEM HSI, in 2016 the administration convened a task force jointly with the Academic Senate, which gathered substantial input from the campus community. In 2017, the task force submitted recommendations to help us achieve our goal more quickly, and these were prioritized for implementation. With a full-time undergraduate student population that is currently 20% Latinx/Chicanx, we are already well on our way to reaching the minimum 25% required for HSI status, as designated by the U.S. Department of Education.
In 2018, a HSI recommendation implementation work group was formed. The work group was instrumental in the launch of the UC San Diego Latinx/Chicanx Academic Excellence Initiative, representing the achievement of the task force’s highest priority and most impactful recommendation. This initiative is integral to our goal of increasing our Latinx/Chicanx student presence, addressing historical educational inequity, and creating a more welcoming learning, living, and working environment for all. To facilitate the initiative’s success, we have established several new partnerships with external community organizations to help create pipeline opportunities for prospective Latinx/Chicanx students. We have also bolstered on-campus programming to ensure the success of our current students. And, in conjunction with Entravision—parent company of Spanish-language television network Univisión—the campus is in the midst of a comprehensive, culturally relevant media campaign to reach San Diego’s Latinx/Chicanx communities.
To facilitate the initiative’s success, through larger campus engagement and collective impact, we are hosting an HSI Summit on March 11, from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm. The summit is open to the entire campus community. Join us and learn why becoming an HSI is so critical to UC San Diego, our region, and State; and how you can take action to deepen our student-centered mission and help UC San Diego be the university of choice for Latinx/Chicanx students. To register for the Summit please visit the registration page.
Thank you for your help in achieving our shared goals. We look forward to your involvement in actively transforming UC San Diego into a student-centered university for the success of current and future Latinx/Chicanx students, families, and communities.
