Call for Nominations and Moderators – 34th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference

Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP) invites your nomination of outstanding undergraduate students to participate in the 34th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) to be held virtually on Saturday, May 8, 2021 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The deadline to nominate up to three presenters is Thursday, April 8, 2021.

A student-centered opportunity
To you – the leaders of UC San Diego’s research community – we would like to offer our sincere appreciation for our student-centered partnership. Many of you have witnessed firsthand the trials, uncertainty, and adjustments met by our student researchers and the fortitude with which they rose to the occasion. Their persistence is why we are particularly proud to announce the return of the URC, the only campus-wide conference to recognize undergraduate scholars in all fields and provide them the opportunity to present their academic pursuits at small roundtables moderated by an expert in their discipline.

About the Undergraduate Research Conference
The URC supports the scholarly and creative accomplishments of UC San Diego students and provides more opportunities for their intellectual recognition and encouragement. To participate in the URC, students must be nominated by a UC San Diego faculty member. Student presenters will share the results of their research and respond to questions and comments from their session’s moderator and audience members.

This year, for the first time, we are offering a select group of students the opportunity to give a plenary talk—a 15-minute-long individual talk to be showcased at the event and published in the URC proceedings. Mentors may nominate one student. One plenary speaker will be chosen from each of the four disciplines—Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, and Physical Sciences & Engineering.

How to nominate a student
To nominate students for this year’s URC, please complete the online form and inform your student of the nomination. AEP will then reach out to the students with further instructions:

In addition, we hope you will consider serving as a roundtable moderator at the event. You do not need to have a student in the conference to serve as moderator. If you would like to volunteer, please complete this form by Friday, April 16, 2021.

URC and the pandemic
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, AEP has worked to optimize the transition to remote learning, and staged the 2020 Online Undergraduate Research Symposium (OURS) and the virtual Summer Research Conference last spring and summer, respectively. The more than 450 students who presented their findings at these events found the experience to be uniquely rewarding. We look forward to celebrating undergraduates’ innovation and excellence in research at the URC, one of our academic community’s signature occasions.

Supporting undergraduate research at UC San Diego
Your nomination of undergraduate presenters and/or participation in this uniquely inclusive scholastic event provides vital support to the prestige of undergraduate research at UC San Diego. We appreciate your encouragement of this valuable program.

If you have any questions regarding the conference, please contact Dr. David Artis, Dean of Undergraduate Research Advancement at dartis@ucsd.edu, or Dr. Claire Kim, Faculty Mentor Program Coordinator at clairekim@ucsd.edu.
