The VCR reports directly to the Chancellor, with a dotted-line reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs. The VCR works closely and regularly with all academic vice chancellors: Executive Vice Chancellor-Academic Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences. The VCR serves on the Chancellor’s Cabinet, advises the Chancellor, EVC, VCHS, and VCMS on research matters for faculty and students, research-related budget priorities and resource allocations; advocates for equity, diversity and inclusion within Office of Research Administration (ORA) and in research at UC San Diego.
The VCR has overall managerial responsibility for UC San Diego's research enterprise. The VCR manages the overall research administration and initiates, coordinates, and administers policies, procedures, and activities which enhance research on the campus; oversees General Campus organized research units (ORUs) and multi-campus research units (MRUs); facilitates the development of proposals for extramural funding of research; fosters interaction with federal, state, and private agencies and with industry to promote campus research programs; coordinates campus policies and practices related to university interaction with industry; creates new opportunities for enhancing research activities and research funding on campus through partnerships with other institutions, foundations, and federal and state granting agencies. In addition, the VCR manages several areas including Research Compliance and Integrity, IRB, Institutional Animal Care, Commercialization and Tech Transfer, and Contracts and Grants Administration.
Through a series of listening sessions with various constituencies on campus to be held before the end of March, the search firm will develop a comprehensive position profile that includes challenges and opportunities for the next VCR. The Search Advisory Committee will begin reviewing candidates soon after the position profile is developed and will continue until the position is filled.
Direct inquiries and nominations should be emailed to Jim Sirriani, Partner and Julie Tea, Partner at Storbeck Search at ucsdvcresearch@storbecksearch.com. You need not contact the nominee to ascertain if they are willing to be considered as a candidate. All nominees will be contacted in confidence by the search firm, to discuss their willingness to have their names put forward to the search advisory committee.
