Request for Proposals - Global Seminars Summer 2022 - Faculty-Led Study Abroad & Study Away Programs
We are pleased to announce the call for Summer 2022 Global Seminars. The Academic Senate approved the Global Seminar program as a permanent study abroad offering for UC San Diego during fall 2009 after a two-year pilot period. The Global Seminar program has offered the opportunity to teach two four-unit courses in an international location during a five-week summer session, with the benefit of full logistical support through Study Abroad, UC San Diego. This year we are also pleased to announce several new options, in addition to the original model. Study Away Global Seminars can be taught in the United States on the same five-week, two course model. Another option is a hybrid model in which two weeks would be taught on-site abroad or in the US, while three weeks would be taught either virtually or on campus. We are also offering a seven to ten week internship pilot model.
According to Academic Senate policy, voting members of the UC San Diego Academic Senate, including Ladder Rank Faculty, Teaching Professors, as well as Continuing Unit 18 Lecturers with eighteen quarters of teaching experience at UC San Diego, are eligible to teach Global Seminars.
Over one hundred seminars have been taught abroad by UC San Diego faculty since the Global Seminars program began in Summer 2008. Recently, we were forced to cancel the on-site Global Seminars for summer 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of our faculty and students is our highest priority. However, we plan to offer six virtual Global Seminars this summer. These virtual seminars will focus on locations such as Austria, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Italy, and Scotland.
Study Abroad UC San Diego hopes to offer another compelling selection of seminars in Summer 2022. Detailed program information and an application may be found in the “Teach a Global Seminar” section at the Study Abroad UC San Diego website.

Together with Dr. Ivano Caponigro, Dr. Matthew Herbst, and Dr. Jan Kleissl (Faculty Co- Directors of Study Abroad UC San Diego), and Dr. Robert T. “Chip” Schooley, Interim Faculty Director of Global Education, we invite you to submit a proposal to lead a Global Seminar in Summer 2022.
A committee will review proposals with an aim to offer students a range of destinations, disciplines, and costs. Proposals received by April 15, 2021 will be considered for the Summer 2022 program.
