Mental Health Awareness Month

In light of persistent challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is natural to experience an increase in stress, anxiety, and other mental conditions. It is more important than ever to be aware of our mental health and prioritize self-care and well-being.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. UC San Diego’s Student Health and Well-Being (Counseling and Psychological Services, the Tritons Flourish Initiative, and Health Promotion Services) have partnered with departments across campus to create virtual well-being programs and events for undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as staff and faculty throughout the month of May. These events include workshops, forums and self-guided online interactive programs. To view a full calendar of events, please visit our online May calendar.

The kick-off event for Mental Health Awareness Month will be the Out of the Darkness Walk (virtual) focused on suicide prevention, the second leading cause of death among people ages 15 to 24. Anyone can participate in the walk (faculty, staff and students). To join our UC San Diego team page please visit Out of the Darkness Campus Walks on donordrive.com.

Currently, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides mental health support for students via telehealth options including video and telephone appointments. To learn more about telehealth options, watch this informative video on YouTube. Contact CAPS at (858) 534-3755 or visit the CAPS website to connect with mental health resources.

Health Promotion Services conducts workshops on stress management, resilience building, health coaching and much more. For a full list of their programs visit the Health Promotion Services online calendar.

Campus staff, faculty and all postdoctoral scholars can access telehealth services through our top-rated Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) at no cost. To make an appointment, call (858) 534-5523 or make an appointment on FSAP’s Blink website.

Campus employees who opted for medical insurance coverage are also offered behavioral health and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services. Please see the behavioral health plan details aligned with your individual medical plan for more information.

UC San Diego Health and Health Sciences staff and faculty can access mental health services via LiveandWorkWell, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) administered by Optum. To access services, call (866) 808-6205 or visit the LiveandWorkWell website and use company code UCSDMC.

The HEAR (Healer Education, Assessment and Referral) Program for medical and pharmacy students, residents and fellows, in addition to medical school faculty and healthcare staff provides online assessment, personalized referrals, and community resources. To access this program, please visit the HEAR website.

We are committed to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of all of our UC San Diego employees and to creating a community where everyone can flourish, even during challenging times.
