Following 13 years of outstanding service to UC San Diego, including nearly eight as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Design & Development Services and Campus Architect, Wm. Joel King, AIA has announced his decision to retire from UC San Diego effective June 30, 2021.
After beginning his career with UC San Diego in 2008, Joel served as Principle Architect, Director of Architectural Services, Senior Director of Project Management, and in 2013 earned the AVC, Campus Architect position through a competitive nation-wide search. Joel serves as Chief Architect for the Office of the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor, and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Resource Management & Planning.
As AVC & Campus Architect, Joel has advised Campus Leadership on the Future Vision of the Capital Improvement Program in support of the Mission and Strategic Plan of UC San Diego. During his tenure, Joel has provided oversight for the following Major Capital Improvement Projects:
Meyer Hall Addition & Renovation, RIMAC Annex, Tamarack Apartments, The Pines Dining, Charles Keeling Apartments, North Campus Village East Housing, Rita Atkinson Apartments, HDH Administration Building, MESOM @ SIO, Structural Materials & Engineering, 64 Degrees Dining, Denny Sanford Telemedicine Building, Central Services Research Facility – Cage Wash, Health Sciences Research Facility 2, Rady School of Management 2, Altman Clinical Translational Research Institute, Jacobs Medical Center, Medical Center OSHPD Central Utility Plant, Koman Outpatient Pavilion, 5 Micro grid Switch Stations, 3 Phases and 3,000 beds of Mesa Graduate Student Housing, North Torrey Pines Living & Learning Neighborhood, Tata Hall for Sciences, I-5 Gilman Drive Bridge, Mesa Housing Pedestrian Bridge, Franklin Antonio Hall, Design & Innovation Building, Regional Transportation Program including Light Rail Transit, Osler, Athena, and Mesa Parking Structures, Public Private Partnerships including Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine, Craig Venter Institute, NOAA Fisheries Center, and Center for Novel Therapeutics; and Theater District Living & Learning Neighborhood.
