I write to announce that Adele Brumfield, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management has been named the University of Michigan’s (U-M) Vice Provost for Enrollment Management, effective August 2.
As Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at U-M, Ms. Brumfield will provide administrative and financial leadership for the Office of Enrollment Management that oversees undergraduate admissions, financial aid, the university registrar, and new student programs. She will oversee a core leadership team of eleven as well as a staff of more than 190 full-time employees and an operating budget of more than $20 million.
AVC Brumfield is a widely recognized and respected leader in the area of Enrollment Management, and has contributed her expertise locally, systemwide and nationally. She joined UC San Diego as AVC for Enrollment Management in 2016, and serves as the chief undergraduate enrollment strategist with oversight for the administrative units of undergraduate admissions, financial aid and scholarships, the office of the registrar as well as units that cover college access, marketing, business operations, enrollment management technology and enrollment analytics.
AVC Brumfield has a strong record of success and commitment to increasing access and equity in enrollment and financial support. Under her leadership during the past five years, UC San Diego has made meaningful gains in attracting and enrolling historically underrepresented students, while working within the policies and processes required by Proposition 209.
Through her strategic and collaborative leadership, AVC Brumfield has engaged partners across UC San Diego to build brand recognition of and affinity with the university among a diverse and highly accomplished population of prospective students. During her tenure, first-year and transfer applications have increased 37%, surpassing 140,000 for fall 2021 – with UC San Diego firmly in second place nationally. These record-breaking numbers are especially remarkable, as they were achieved during a global pandemic and pivot to an entirely remote outreach, communication, and engagement strategy by the enrollment management team. In partnership with the Senate Committee on Admissions, AVC Brumfield also shepherded a comprehensive re-imagining of the university’s holistic review process, compelled by the elimination of standardized testing for the fall 2021 cohort. This transformational work will inform our admissions review process for years to come.
AVC Brumfield has provided strong leadership and focus within the Enrollment Management organization to improve the student and staff experience through process improvement, technological enhancements, systems renewal, and in staff training and professional development. She has contributed her expertise in service to campuswide committees on a broad range of topics including Enterprise Systems Renewal, Undergraduate Experience and Success, and the Advisory Committee on the Campus Reaccreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. She also co-chairs the Undergraduate Enrollment Committee. AVC Brumfield’s systemwide contributions have included service on the Test Feasibility Study Work Group, the Educational Financing Model Steering Committee, the Council of Chief Outreach Officers, and the Verification Task Force.
Her professional service includes membership on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) board, including two years as chair. She has also shared U.S. higher education opportunities abroad through the College Board’s Overseas Schools Project funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools, where she also is an advisory committee member. A highly regarded leader in her field, AVC Brumfield is frequently called upon to share her expertise on admissions and enrollment topics at professional conferences and programs across the nation.
I have deeply appreciated AVC Brumfield’s innovative and thoughtful leadership of our Enrollment Management team, and her collaborative approach to increasing access for and holistically supporting our diverse and talented population of students. I wish her the very best as she takes on her new role at the University of Michigan.
Please join me in congratulating AVC Brumfield and in thanking her for her impactful service to UC San Diego during these past five years. A national search for AVC Brumfield’s successor will commence immediately.
