Urgent Security Matter: Two-Step Login (Duo) Now Required for All Email Clients

Given recent events such as the UCOP data breach and the ransomware attack at Scripps Health, effective Tuesday, May 25, at 1:00 p.m. PDT, all access to UC San Diego email will require the use of two-step login (Duo) as part of our continued security enhancements.

Most members of the UC San Diego community are using contemporary versions of email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail, which already support two-step login, so the change will be automatically implemented. Please note that UC San Diego Health has already implemented this functionality.

What to Expect
The only visible change for most customers will be a two-step (Duo) login prompt when checking email. However, older email clients do not support two-step login and will no longer be able to access UC San Diego email services. Some examples of common insecure email clients include:
  • Outlook for Windows prior to Outlook 2013
  • Outlook for Mac 2016 and older
  • Mac OS mail prior to v.10.14
  • iOS mail prior to v11
  • Thunderbird prior to v78
  • Android Mail App
  • Email clients using POP
We recognize these measures will present a temporary disruption for some members of our community, but we are committed to helping our users with this transition. Please act now by talking to your unit IT support or the IT Services Service Desk if you believe you will be impacted. IT Services will be directly contacting individuals who we believe are using obsolete clients and email protocols.

Access Your Email via Web

We strongly encourage users of insecure mail clients to access email via a web browser until they can set up a new email client:
  • Campus Exchange: mail.ucsd.edu
  • Campus Gmail: mail.gmail.com
For directions on how to read email using your browser, along with a list of supported email clients and versions, as well as instructions for installing updated client software, please go to https://blink.ucsd.edu/technology/email/tasks/clients/index.html.
