New On-site Research Activity Guidelines, Including Music and Performing Arts Guidelines
The outstanding support and commitment of everyone in our Triton community to campus safety has allowed UC San Diego to return to on-campus research activities in a safe, measured way. Thanks to the excellent outcomes that have resulted, along with a rise in vaccinations, new data modeling and continued vigilance, we can now implement some additional changes to further increase on-site research and artistic activity.
REMOVING DENSITY RESTRICTIONS
On-site research activities will no longer be limited by density restrictions (e.g. the current restriction to 50% of total lab personnel allowed on-site at one time). Instead, all research groups will comply with CDC and campus guidelines regarding social distancing requirements, use of face masks and other safety protocols. Current guidance requires 6 feet of physical distance between individuals.
RESEARCH VOLUNTEERS
Research volunteers are now allowed on-site. All volunteers must be added to approved Research Ramp-up plans. Everyone must adhere to all campus/lab safety requirements. Keep in mind:
Volunteers not affiliated with UC San Diego must be vaccinated and their vaccination card should be checked by the PI.
Volunteers must be prioritized in the following order:
UC San Diego students
Students from other universities
Minors 16 years or older
Non-student volunteers
MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS GUIDELINES
The Research Continuity Task Force, Music Department, and EH&S have developed the following rehearsal and performance safety guidelines for music, dance and theater.
Total number of performers indoors not to exceed 10 persons.
Singers are encouraged to wear masks during rehearsals. During dress rehearsals and performance, singers do not need to wear masks provided 15 feet of physical distance is maintained.
Regular masks to be worn by everyone other than singers and brass/wind players.
Physical distance between performers must be a minimum of 6 feet, with greater distances noted below:
10 feet between brass/wind players
12 feet between masked vocal performers and dancers
15 feet between unmasked vocal performers
Bell covers should be used for brass and wind instruments
Room occupancy time limit is 90 minutes
Room refresh time (between ensembles) is 30 minutes minimum (allowing for at least 2 air changes)
Sanitization:
Shared instruments will be sanitized after each use with products that do not damage instruments
Condensation from brass/wind instruments will be emptied into performer’s absorbent pad (not on the floor) via dripping rather than blowing through
You should consult with your department chair regarding your plan for indoor rehearsal/performance prior to beginning an activity. Music/theatre/dance rehearsal/performance activity does not require a Research Ramp-up plan, but all employees must submit a Work Location Status form.
As we continue to move forward in our research ramp-up and return to campus plans, we thank our staff, faculty, and students for your efforts, your flexibility and your dedication. We appreciate your hard work to make these efforts a success.
