The Director is responsible for the design, conduct, and assessment of activities that foster a campus culture of integrity, supporting Research Ethics across campus, including within the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI). The Director will report to the Vice Chancellor for Research with secondary reporting to the Director, ACTRI.

Responsibilities of the Director include:
  • Education: learner-centered education for faculty, research staff and students engaged in research, designed to meet federal and UC San Diego programmatic requirements in the responsible conduct of research (RCR), including Scientific Ethics, the Research Integrity series, and other courses, workshops, lectures, and seminars on research ethics. The Director either provides these educational opportunities or recruits other faculty to do so.
  • Consultation: the Director provides consultation to faculty, students and staff on topics including the ethical design and conduct of research, clarification of ethical challenges, and possible strategies to meet those challenges.
  • Policy: the Director assists research groups, departments, divisions and the university in the development of research ethics guidelines, policies and SOPs.
  • Public Engagement: The Director collaborates with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Institute for Practical Ethics, and the San Diego Research Ethics Consortium to engage with the public and partner institutions to promote public knowledge and understanding of the highest ethical standards in research.
  • Evidence-based Practice: The Director stays abreast of developments in the field of research ethics and contributes to the field through publications that inform practice at other institutions nationally and internationally.
Qualifications include:
  • Superior teaching and research record
  • Previous activity in research ethics, preferably including activity in the Research Ethics Program or ACTRI Ethics Service.
  • Demonstrated contributions to the campus community, including efforts to promote equity, diversity and inclusion, and the UC San Diego Principles of Community.
Eligibility is restricted to those individuals holding faculty appointments at UC San Diego. It is anticipated that the initial appointment will be for a five-year term beginning in Fall 2021.

Applications or nominations by colleagues must be accompanied by a curriculum vita, and should be sent to ora-admin@ucsd.edu no later than July 30, 2021.

A search committee including academic appointees and administrative leaders will be named shortly.
