Recognizing Our Active-Duty Military, Veteran and Military-Connected Communities
| |
UC San Diego maintains a deep and longstanding connection to our region’s military community. As a neighbor, partner, citizen and employer, we recognize that the sacrifices of our service members overseas have an exponential and profound impact on our communities here at home.
Grief from the recent heartbreaking loss of 13 U.S. service members, 10 of whom were based at Camp Pendleton, has reverberated throughout our campus community. We are sensitive to the emotional toll recent events may be having on our veterans, students, colleagues, families and friends who are impacted. Our campus community honors your commitment to service and stands together to support you during this difficult time.
If you are experiencing heightened feelings of stress, anxiety or grief, UC San Diego has resources to support you. Students may contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (858) 534-3755. If you are a campus employee, contact the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program at (858) 534-5523. FSAP counselors have direct experience with military, their families, and veterans. If you are a UC San Diego Health employee, call (866) 808-6205, company code UCSDMC or review information pertaining to the Employee Assistance Program on Health HR's website.
Help for veterans is available anytime on the Veterans Crisis Line
at (800) 273-8255 (press 1 for veterans), the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255, or on the Mental Health America website.
Campus Resources for our Military-Connected Community
If you are interested in getting involved with the veteran community at UC San Diego, the Veterans Staff Association (VSA) is open to all faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members. VSA hosts events, programs and projects throughout the year that benefit veterans, active military, retired military, reservists and military affiliates at UC San Diego and in the San Diego community. To learn more about joining VSA, email Jan Noz, chair or Paul M. Krueger co-chair of the VSA, or call (858) 534-4382.
In collaboration with campus and community partners, the Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC) also supports the academic, personal and professional success of our student veterans, military service members, their family members, and ROTC. SVRC provides a safe space for military-connected students to access peer support, resources and referrals, study space, a meditation room, computers, lockers, snacks and coffee, and free printing. Campus and community partners provide in-center access to veteran benefits counseling, career advising, disability accommodations, mental health support, and additional services.
