We are delighted to announce that after a national search for the new Associate Vice Chancellor - Campus Budget, Mercedes Munoz has been appointed to the role.
Mercedes currently serves as Executive Director – Financial and Budget Management for the Chancellor’s Office. In this wide-ranging position, Mercedes assists in the development and implementation of strategies to effectively deploy campus resources in alignment with our campus goals. She provides oversight and management of campus-wide funds and serves as our Treasurer, coordinating treasury-related duties including cash management, debt management, and internal campus loans. Mercedes also serves as the Financial Officer for both the Chancellor’s Office and VC Advancement, responsible for all matters regarding budget and financial planning, resource allocations, budget development, and staffing control.
An alumna of UC San Diego, Mercedes has worked at UC San Diego since 1997, the last 17 years focused on budget and fiscal affairs. Across her various roles, Mercedes has had administrative management of budget, space, FTEs, human resources, capital projects and debt. She has also served on and led campus- and system-wide task groups related to best practices, initiatives, and system implementations. The campus will benefit tremendously from Mercedes’ expertise and counsel as she continues to work with the Chancellor, the Chancellor’s Cabinet, and campus leaders to advance UC San Diego’s vision as a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university.
Mercedes’ early appointment will allow for a solid transition period with incumbent Sylvia Lepe, which will be very helpful during our budget process. We are also fortunate to have a strong budget team in place.
Please join us in congratulating Mercedes on her appointment.
