Updates from Human Resources | |
I’m pleased to share the exciting news that Dr. Cathy A. Thompson has joined the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program as our newest clinician. Dr. Thompson brings to this role extensive clinical experience, including 20 years with UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Dr. Thompson will tailor her support to BIPOC staff and faculty, leveraging her strong connections and leadership experiences across campus.
Dr. Thompson’s areas of specialty include practices to promote anti-racism; racial identity development, especially among biracial/multi-racial/ethnic/cultural individuals; and building healthy relationships to self and others through assertive communication and positive self-esteem. Human Resources and all campus staff and faculty will certainly benefit from her guidance as we continue our commitment to a more equitable, diverse and inclusive campus work-life experience.
Read on to learn what else is happening in our campus community.

Staff Town Hall: Please join us for a Staff Town Hall next week on Wednesday, January 26 at 9 a.m. We’ll have our panel of campus and health experts on hand to give updates about topics including the state of the pandemic, testing, vaccine boosters, campus health and safety guidelines and more. Register and submit your questions.
COVID-19 Boosters Required by Jan. 31 (or Two Weeks After Becoming Eligible): All students, faculty, staff and academic appointees accessing facilities at any UC campus are required to receive a COVID-19 booster by January 31, per an updated UC vaccination policy. Those who are not yet eligible for a booster will need to receive a booster no later than two weeks after they become eligible. Booster shot appointments remain available at the Price Center as well as through drive-up appointments at Hillcrest and La Jolla vaccination sites. Review eligibility and schedule a booster appointment. For guidance in uploading your booster information, review the COVID-19 Vaccination Documentation Process.
Instructions for Positive COVID Test Results: Updated guidance is now available for students and campus employees who have received a positive COVID-19 test result or were informed that they have a confirmed exposure. Regardless of vaccination status, campus community members must isolate for five days after symptom onset, positive test result or confirmed exposure. Isolation may end after conducting a rapid antigen test and receiving a negative result, otherwise isolation will continue for 10 days. Whether or not isolation ends on day 5, everyone must mask indoors and outdoors for 10 days. See the full set of instructions on the Exposure and Contact Tracing page.
Order Your Free At-Home COVID-19 Test Kit: Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order four free at-home rapid antigen COVID-19 tests. There is a limit of one order per residential address and orders will ship free starting in late January. Order your tree COVID-19 test kit.
Ordering Masks and COVID PPE from Logistics: Departments are permitted to place bulk orders for KN95 masks and other COVID PPE items through Oracle Procurement, at the expense of the ordering department. The Logistics unit keeps a minimum of 100,000 KN95 masks in stock. Logistics also has N95 masks in stock for employees who meet the EH&S Respiratory Protection Program requirements. Learn more about ordering masks and COVID PPE.
Live Scan Services in January: In line with the extension of remote work (where feasible) through the end of January, Live Scan will be extending its closure of in-person services through the end of the month. During this time, hiring departments will need to order Consumer Reports instead.
Updates from the Staff Association
Crafting Social Session - Repurposing Leftover Wrapping Paper: Save those scraps of wrapping paper for a virtual crafting session next week on Thursday, January 27 from 12 - 12:45 p.m., hosted by the Staff Association and the Craft Center. The program is open to all career employees and the scholarship funds can be used toward a professional development activity which requires a fee. Submit your application by Tuesday, March 15. Learning and Development Opportunities
Introducing the Learning Boost Series: Meet leaders, dreamers, innovators and change champions at Learning Boost, a new year-long series of twice-monthly short talks, sponsored by Human Resources. The first installment of Learning Boost is on Wednesday, January 26 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. and features Izabel C. Francy, LCSW, PMHC, Behavioral Therapist. Izabel will share her expertise about Cultivating Courage and Connection. Register for Learning Boost.
Supervising at UC San Diego: All supervisors of campus staff at UC San Diego, regardless of tenure or experience in management, are invited to participate in the new Supervising at UC San Diego (S@UCSD) training program. This orientation provides an overview of the most important do’s and don'ts of supervising at UC San Diego, emphasizing an approach where supervisors/managers are grounded in best practices, recognize areas that may implicate laws and regulations, and connect with resources to help navigate supervisory challenges. This focus on supervisory responsibilities is designed to complement the Supervisory Training Laboratory’s (“Sup Lab”) exploration of managerial skills.
The program includes two virtual sessions from 1 - 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 17 and Thursday, February 24, facilitated by Human Resources. Both sessions are required to receive credit and there is no fee to register. This training will be offered four times per year. Register for Supervising at UC San Diego on the UC Learning Center.
