It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Jim Rawlins as the next Associate Vice Chancellor, Enrollment Management (AVC-EM), effective January 31, 2022.
Rawlins will be joining UC San Diego from the University of Oregon where he serves as the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management and the Director of the Office of Admissions. In these roles, he has collaborated internationally, nationally, and within his own institution to improve access to higher education, cultivate and mentor new members of the profession, advocate for student funding, shape the public dialogue on access and opportunity, and support the university’s goal to increase campus diversity. Rawlins has a Master of Music in Performance from Southern Methodist University, and is a candidate for a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Washington.
As the next AVC-EM, Rawlins, under the direction of Executive Vice Chancellor Simmons, will lead UC San Diego’s identification, recruitment, admissions, yield, enrollment, and funding of high ability and diverse undergraduate students. AVC Rawlins will have direct supervisory responsibility and oversight for the offices of Admissions, Registrar, Financial Aid & Scholarships, Enrollment Analytics, Enrollment Management Technology Services, Creative Services, Cal-SOAP, and the Enrollment Management Business Office, providing campuswide management, leadership and accountability for Enrollment Management. He will be an ex officio member of the Committee on Admissions of the Academic Senate, San Diego Division, and will ensure that the policies enacted by the Committee on Admissions are appropriately implemented.
AVC Rawlins will be responsible for devising and implementing a strategic and integrated approach to enrollment management for UC San Diego. He will work closely with campus constituents and leadership to build new partnerships and establish critical links with each academic school or division and their respective faculty and administrators. His integrated approach will include developing relationships with faculty and staff leaders from the campus, system, and UC Office of the President and collaboration through institutional committees and taskforces charged with various enrollment management initiatives. AVC Rawlins will also work with campus and community partners (local and state) that have an active interest in inclusive enrollment management and degree completion at UC San Diego.
We sincerely thank Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Alysson Satterlund for providing exceptional leadership as the chair of the search advisory committee, and for ensuring that a diversity of voices was involved in the search process. We are grateful to the members of the search advisory committee for their many hours of service and for their contributions and insights. We also appreciate the input from Enrollment Management personnel, other members of the campus community, the Chancellor's Community Advisory Board, and the Alumni Council, who participated in the search process.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to Adele Brumfield for her service as the previous AVC-EM, before she assumed a new role at the University of Michigan. Additionally, we would like to recognize Betty Huff who has served as the Interim AVC-EM since August 2021. She will remain in the role until AVC Rawlins’ arrival and will assist in his transition to UC San Diego.
Please join us in congratulating Jim on his appointment. His thoughtful approach to leadership and enrollment strategies, and his vision for the future, will serve our university well.
