It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Achyuta Adhvaryu, Ph.D., as the inaugural Director of the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy India Center, effective Jan. 1, 2023. Adhvaryu will also serve as Professor of Economics at the School of Global Policy and Strategy. He completed his graduate studies at Yale University, where he earned a Ph.D., Master of Philosophy and Master of Arts in economics.
Adhvaryu is currently the Alexander M. Nick Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. He previously served as an Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Yale School of Public Health. Adhvaryu is a member of the National Bureau of Economic Research and has published extensively in peer-reviewed academic journals, including top economic journals such as the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Political Economy, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
As director of the new UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy India Center, Adhvaryu will help establish the center as a world-class hub for research, education, and public engagement related to harnessing new opportunities and tackling persistent challenges facing India, and as well as advancing U.S.-India collaboration. The Center will bring together thought leaders as well as top public and private sector decision-makers to ensure that evidence-based insights influence practitioners’ dialogue.
Adhvaryu’s extensive research in the fields of development economics, organizational economics, and health economics and his management experience make him well suited to lead our new center. He brings entrepreneurial spirit and leadership skills, having co-founded and served as Chief Development Officer of Good Business Lab, a global nonprofit focused on worker wellbeing and productivity. Since its creation in 2017, the Good Business Lab has grown to become an international organization with more than 100 employees and four offices around the world. The lab applies research insights from Adhvaryu and other leading academics to find common ground between worker well-being and business interests.
Under his leadership, the center will draw upon UC San Diego’s strengths across academic disciplines to produce innovative research on topics that include productivity and employment, climate action and energy policy, gender equity and health, technology and innovation, as well as trade, migration, investment, and security relations across the US and India.
In addition, Adhvaryu will oversee India Center offerings that will, over time, include executive education courses, fellowships and internships support for students, policy forums, research exchange programs and common data facilities, among other activities.
Please join me in warmly welcoming Achyuta Adhvaryu to UC San Diego. His vision and strategy to create strong ties between academics and practitioners will serve the School of Global Policy and Strategy, UC San Diego, and our global community well.
