Recruiting Senate Faculty for Eighth College
Dear Faculty,
Last May, the UC Board of Regents approved the proposal to establish an eighth undergraduate college. Eighth College is scheduled to welcome its inaugural class in Fall 2023.
All General Campus faculty and some faculty from SIO and Health Sciences have affiliations with one of the undergraduate colleges. Many faculty engage with a college through teaching and/or service. A college’s faculty also participates in the governance of the college, electing members of the Faculty Executive Committee, the Academic Senate representatives, and voting on a variety of academic questions, such as bylaws and changes to the college’s general education curriculum.
The Council of Provosts has already begun assigning unaffiliated (e.g., new) faculty to Eighth College. However, I am writing to see if some of you might be interested in moving your affiliation to this new college. The college’s theme is Engagement & Community; this aligns with a general education curriculum that emphasizes critical community engagement and anti-racism; more information, including the proposal, can be found at eighth.ucsd.edu.
If you are interested in becoming part of the college’s inaugural faculty or if you would like to discuss this, please contact me at due@ucsd.edu.
Thank you very much,
John Moore Dean of Undergraduate Education
