Student Support and Reminders During the Strike

Dear Tritons,

As labor contract negotiations with UAW continue, we write to share information and student resources during the strike, as well as to reinforce that all graduate and undergraduate students are valuable members of the UC San Diego community.

Maintaining continuity in learning
We would like to stress the importance of maintaining continuity in learning for all undergraduate and graduate students. The university will be communicating with faculty in the near future to address questions around awarding and submitting grades by the Registrar’s deadlines. Syllabi, assignments, and tests for each class – including independent study – should continue as originally stated unless explicitly adjusted by faculty.

Any program expectations around other non-course related academic progress and milestones – such as comprehensive or qualifying exams, as well as thesis proposals and defenses – should also continue as usual.

Union-represented student employees may choose to participate in a strike. We encourage these students – and any other students – to continue taking responsibility for their academic progress while considering the important distinction between employment and academic efforts toward their degree.

Students enrolled in courses, including independent study, should continue with the activities associated with those courses. As always, grading will be based on academic progress, regardless of employment or strike participation. Faculty may communicate with striking students regarding academic activities associated with the courses in which those students are enrolled.

A community of care
We understand that this may be a stressful time for all of you, regardless of your personal involvement in negotiation-related activities. For health and well-being support and resources – including 1:1 counseling, group sessions, and more – please take advantage of the many programs and services outlined in yesterday’s UC San Diego Today article highlighting CAPS’ offerings for students.

Staying up-to-date
The latest information and answers to questions may be found on UC San Diego’s Labor Negotiation Updates website.

Please, take care of yourselves. UC San Diego is dedicated to supporting all Tritons – especially during difficult times – and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing patience and commitment to learning.

Be well,
Alysson M. Satterlund
