After a comprehensive national search, it is my distinct pleasure to announce the appointment of Piya Bose, Ph.D., as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (AVC-SA) – effective January 16, 2023.
Bose joins UC San Diego from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) – one of California’s most diverse four-year universities – where she currently serves as the Dean of Students. In this role, Bose has provided leadership and management for functional areas including: Student Life and Development; the CARES Team, a collaborative behavioral intervention team to mitigate threats and support students in distress; the Campus Events Office; the Office of Multicultural Affairs and six Student Cultural Resource Centers; the Dream Success Center serving undocumented students; and Basic Needs services.
Bose has more than 18 years of student-facing higher education experience, having served in a variety of student affairs leadership roles in Southern California universities including UC Irvine, Pomona College, and Cal Poly Pomona.
She has received numerous national and local awards and honors, having most recently been selected to participate in the upcoming January 2023 NASPA Alice Manicur Symposium. Previously, she was recognized with the the Long Beach State Athletics “Beach Pride” Award, the A Place Called Home - Shaheen Scholars “Community Partner” Award, and the “Outstanding Woman” of the Western Association of College and University Housing Officers (WACUHO) Award, among others.
Bose holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Student Affairs from Claremont Graduate University, and a Master of Arts in Education from Cal Poly Humboldt. She previously completed her undergraduate work at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
As the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Bose will provide overall leadership and direction for Student Affairs Case Management Services (SACMS), the Office of Student Conduct, and the Student Affairs Assessment, Evaluation & Organizational Development (AEOD) team. She will also co-lead collaborations with the Division of Undergraduate Education and the Undergraduate Colleges to further improve the overall undergraduate student experience at UC San Diego. Additionally, Bose will collaboratively advance strategic Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racist initiatives that further transform the student experience, close opportunity gaps, and increase a sense of belonging for all Tritons.
