Campus Safety and Masking Protocols Updated for Winter
The continued improvement of public health on campus and throughout San Diego County has provided another opportunity to modify our campus safety protocols. In consultation with our campus and health system experts, I am pleased to announce the following changes to our campus safety protocols.
Masking
The masking mandate for instructional settings and Triton transportation will be suspended and masking will be optional in classrooms, labs and on Triton transportation beginning Dec. 16, 2022. Our public health experts still recommend wearing a mask in public settings, especially indoors, as masking provides substantial protection from infections caused by SARS-CoV-2, flu and other respiratory viruses.
Masking will remain required in all clinical settings. UC San Diego Health employees will continue to follow the three-tier system for masking.
We will continue to monitor viral activity during the Winter Quarter. Should public health conditions warrant, UC San Diego may re-enact a masking mandate at a later date. Testing Requirements Lifted
Asymptomatic campus residents, individuals who are not vaccinated for COVID-19 and individuals who have not received a vaccine booster are no longer required to test weekly. PCR test kits will remain available at vending machines across campus for those who become symptomatic.
Campus Vaccination and Testing Site to Close
The Recreation Gym vaccination and testing site on campus will close on Dec. 16, 2022. It is now open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Weekend vaccination and testing hours have concluded. Vaccination appointments for students will be available beginning in the Winter Quarter at Student Health Services. For those who become symptomatic, self-administered PCR test kits are available at campus vending machines.
Faculty and staff can schedule an appointment for vaccine and vaccine boosters with their primary care provider or with UC San Diego Health.
Winter Quarter Move-In for Campus Residents
Campus-operated housing protocols will follow established transition periods at the start of Winter Quarter. Before returning to campus, campus residents are required to have a negative rapid antigen test result. Upon move-in, campus residents will complete a PCR test on Day 1 and Day 5, mask in congregate areas, and are not permitted guests. Once a negative test on Day 5 is confirmed, masks can be removed and guests can visit suites and rooms.
Thank You
We have come to this point because of your commitment, your compliance and your continued flexibility in the face of this dynamic public health situation. You have demonstrated true Triton pride, true Triton compassion and the best of what makes our Triton community so unique. I am deeply thankful for your continued vigilance and care.
