Academic Senate Updates to the I Grade & Deadlines to Change Grading Option

Dear Colleagues,

At its October 25, 2022 meeting, the Representative Assembly approved a proposal from the Educational Policy Committee to amend San Diego Senate Regulation 500, Sections B, D, and E.  The following three changes take effect for Winter 2023.
  1. San Diego Senate Regulation 500(B), The I Grade, was amended to clarify the intended use of the I grade for assigning an incomplete, specify that a student must complete a majority of the coursework to request an Incomplete, and add language that instructors are required to inform students when assigning an I grade.
  2. San Diego Senate Regulation 500(D), The P and NP Grades, was amended to move the deadline to change grading option (letter or P/NP) for undergraduate students from the end of week four to the end of week six.
  3. San Diego Senate Regulation 500(E), The S and U grades, was amended to move the deadline to change grading option (letter or S/U) for graduate students from the beginning of the quarter to the end of week six.
The proposed amendments were developed in consultation with the undergraduate colleges, the Division of Undergraduate Education, and the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs.

The proposal with the complete text of the approved revisions to Regulation 500 is posted online. The revisions to San Diego Senate Regulation 500 will be posted on the Senate’s website when it becomes effective, in Winter 2023. Questions related to the policy revisions may be directed to Ashley (Welch) Hill, Senate Associate Director, at awelch@ucsd.edu.

Sincerely,
Geoffrey Cook
