Information Regarding Potential UAW Strike Activity
Dear Colleagues,
As you may know, the University of California is in contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW) which represents four bargaining units of UC academic appointees:
After the collective bargaining agreements for these groups expired on October 31, these units announced their intent to strike beginning Nov. 14, 2022, at all University of California locations, if an agreement is not reached. The duration of the strike is unknown.
UC San Diego is prepared to ensure the continuity of learning and research should there be a strike. At this time, there are no plans to change class schedules, office hours or campus services; however, depending on the level of strike participation, some undergraduate, graduate and research activities could be impacted. UC San Diego will provide additional information, including an FAQ, in the coming days.
UC San Diego respects the rights of represented employees to bargain collectively on the terms and conditions of employment. Employees may choose whether or not to participate in strike activities, and those who are striking are entitled to perform legally protected strike activities, including picketing, near the exterior of campus property and entrances.
Supervisory and managerial employees should refrain from engaging in any behavior that would constitute interfering with an employee’s rights to engage in union activity. This includes, but is not limited to, asking them about their union activity, including whether they intend to strike. We also strongly discourage making statements to discourage or deter their union activity, monitoring their union activities, creating more onerous working conditions, or otherwise discriminating or retaliating against employees because of their union activities or support for the union.
Ultimately, differences between the UC and the UAW must be resolved at the bargaining table. The UC Office of the President leads these UC systemwide contract negotiations and is engaged with the union to settle these contracts as quickly as possible. Please refer to the UC-UAW negotiations information web page for additional information on the negotiations.
Thank you for being flexible and compassionate during these circumstances. Your dedication to all of our students and your support for their learning and development is deeply appreciated.
Best regards,
