Spring Instruction Reminders

Dear Tritons,
We hope that the end of the Winter Quarter went smoothly for you, and that you have been able to enjoy the additional daylight and warmer temperatures this week.
It is with great enthusiasm that we write to reinforce that UC San Diego will return to mostly in-person instruction for the Spring Quarter. Approximately 95 percent of undergraduate and about 98 percent of graduate courses are planned for in-person learning for the upcoming quarter.
We know many of you were disappointed by the move to remote instruction due to the Omicron variant at the start of last quarter, and we hope the return to in-person learning, which provides many more opportunities for community building and personal development, will help to ease some of that lingering frustration. Spring quarter is a great time to engage in the leadership, internship, change-making and research options that will be more readily available as we continue to return to in-person learning. We also want to reassure everyone that classroom instruction remains one of the safest activities on campus.
Of course, we hope that you will exercise prudence while enjoying spring break and will continue to abide by the latest campus health and safety guidelines. Doing so will allow the start of the spring quarter to be smoother for everyone.
A few reminders:
  • If you are looking for opportunities this Spring Break to have fun, engage in research, leadership, service and recreation, visit the Spring Break 2022 page.
  • You are encouraged to communicate early and often with your instructors regarding course structure, expectations, and timelines.
  • Instructors are being encouraged to record podcasts of lectures, when it is feasible for them, to allow for flexibility if you have to miss a class meeting due to illness.
  • While we understand that some of you may still face challenges returning to campus, please bear in mind that the great majority of our classes will be in-person, as shown in the schedule of courses.
  • If you need ADA accommodations, please remember to request them as early as possible through OSD; doing so means everyone has more time to make the necessary arrangements.
  • We encourage you to work closely with your academic advisors to navigate unique circumstances that individual students may face.
  • The university cannot guarantee remote options (including midterms and exams) for any specific course. The modality of student participation and assessments in a given course is determined by the instructor, and will be clearly communicated in syllabi or course outlines at the beginning of the quarter.
As always, we will continue to be guided by science and our public health experts as we navigate this next phase of the pandemic together. Please also know that we will be in communication with you immediately should circumstances change and wholeheartedly appreciate your continued commitment to the Triton Community.
Best regards,
