Support for Undergraduate Students at the End of Winter Quarter

At the start of Winter Quarter 2022, the impact from the surge of COVID cases early in the quarter posed considerable challenges to our campus operations. Our community’s active diligence has been critical in limiting pandemic spread and keeping campus safe and healthy, resulting in the significant decline of positive rates in recent weeks. Looking ahead to the remainder of Winter Quarter, we would like to offer the following information and resources for undergraduate students. We also extend our greatest gratitude for your continued support and vigilance in the effort to bring our campus back to normal operations, providing tremendous optimism as we look forward to Spring Quarter.

Enrollment and Registration Deadlines

Enrollment and grading option change deadlines for this quarter have passed:
  • The University’s deadline for students to change their grading option (Letter or P/NP) is the Friday of Week 4. For Winter Quarter 2022, the deadline was January 31.
  • The University’s deadline for undergraduate students to drop a course with a W grade is the Friday of Week 6. For Winter Quarter 2022, the deadline was February 11.
Associated Students, the Academic Senate, and University administrators know that many students continue to face pandemic-related stressors impacting their coursework. Therefore, we encourage students to communicate with their department, program, and college advisors prior to finals week through the Virtual Advising Center to explore their current options, which may include:
  • Retroactive Withdrawal - Petition to drop one or more courses with a W after the Week 6 deadline.
  • Incomplete - Request an Incomplete. This option may be appropriate for students who need additional time to complete a course after the end of the quarter due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. illness). To be eligible, students must be doing passing work at the time of the request. Decisions on whether to approve a request are at the discretion of the instructor. The Winter Quarter deadline for filing a request to receive an Incomplete is March 21. Incompletes must be made up by the end of the following quarter; it is important to gauge the amount of work needed to make up missed work to avoid a situation where the Incomplete lapses to a failing grade.
  • Late Change of Grading Option - Petition to change grading option after the Week 4 deadline. Please note: Decisions about accepting P/NP grades for degree requirements are at the discretion of individual colleges, departments, and programs. It is a student’s responsibility to verify with the appropriate advising office that a P/NP grade is acceptable for a specific requirement and that they will not be exceeding the 25% P/NP limit.
There are many unique situations that we are all facing as a result of the pandemic, and we recognize that the information provided here may not be sufficient or applicable in all situations. We encourage students to refer to Remote Student Resources and communicate with their department, program, and college advisors through the Virtual Advising Center for additional guidance and support.

Sincerely,
