Accelerating Public Access to Research Data Summit Taking Place April 25

I’m pleased to invite all faculty and staff engaged in research at UC San Diego to a university-wide summit to discuss strategies to accelerate public access to research data. They summit will be via Zoom on Monday, April 25, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The summit will build on work conducted at the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU), funded by the National Science Foundation. This work resulted in the Guide to Accelerating Public Access to Research Data. In parallel to that work, related research has occurred at the local, UC-wide, and national levels which will also inform discussion at the summit:
  • In 2021, UC San Diego completed participation in an Ithaka S+R Research Study on supporting big data research.
  • At the national level, the National Academies of Sciences convened a workshop on open science and is working to convene in 2022 a community of practice among higher education focused on this topic.
  • The National Science and Technology Council released a report in October 2020 on the challenge of balancing openness with information security and privacy.
Discussion at the April 25 summit will focus on strategies and tactics for acting on the report’s recommendations. This input will inform continued work by a project team, resulting in a report and recommendations to the Chancellor on ways UC San Diego can increase public access to research data for the advancement of science and the public interest.

I look forward to your participation in our summit on April 25.
Sincerely,
