Retirement of Associate Chancellor Susan Sterner
Following more than 27 years of exceptional service to UC San Diego, Susan Sterner will retire on June 30, 2022. Currently in the role of Associate Chancellor, Sterner has served in key leadership positions within Special Events and Protocols, Alumni Engagement and most recently as an integral member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet.
Since her appointment as Assistant Chancellor in 2015 and then as Associate Chancellor in 2019, Sterner has provided broad-scope research and analysis, as well as strategy development, to advance institutional initiatives and my vision for the university. She has led many strategic initiatives for the campus, including the development of signature campus events such as UC San Diego’s Founders Celebration and All Campus Commencement, which has brought prominent dignitaries to campus such as the Dalai Lama, Muhammad Yunus and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. She contributed to the successful launch and completion of both of UC San Diego’s capital fundraising campaigns, helping to develop and steward giving at every level, including large transformational gifts. And she has also been actively involved in several comprehensive capital program management projects.
Sterner began her career at UC San Diego in 1995 as Deputy Director of Special Events and Protocols, producing engagement events for a variety of internal and external audiences. In 2008, she became the Executive Director of Alumni and Community Engagement, where she built and led a team of professionals in developing comprehensive alumni programs in all academic divisions and graduate schools.
Her extensive leadership experience at UC San Diego was extended in 2015 when she was named Assistant Chancellor. During her time in the Chancellor’s Office, Sterner has contributed greatly to the success of key institutional initiatives, including the 10-year, $3B Campaign for UC San Diego. Sterner received a UC San Diego Exemplary Staff of the Year Award in 2004. She is a member of the Faculty Club Board of Directors and the La Jolla Playhouse Board of Trustees.
