This year marks the 16th Annual Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Celebration at UC San Diego. The month-long commemoration honors the Asian and Pacific Islander American identity through performances, films and webinars. This year’s theme, “Sharing Comfort, Community, and Care,” is a call to come together to show compassion, to care for one another, and to exchange critical perspectives in achieving social equity and justice for and with Asian Pacific Islander Americans.
The annual kickoff celebration on May 6 will feature Minh Lê, award-winning author of “Green Lantern: Legacy” for DC Comics, live entertainment provided by Asayake Taiko, Raas Ruckas, award-winning West-Indian dance team and DJ Akrite. In addition, this year’s scholarship awards will be presented to our undergraduate, graduate and alumni scholars.
In recognition of this annual event, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved so that employees may participate in the annual celebration activities. Supervisors are asked to allow employees to attend, as long as the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
We thank the members of the planning committee for their work in coordinating these educational and celebratory campus activities. Please join us and our campus community in honoring the legacy and contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.
