Annual Campus Lighting & Safety Review Walks

Now is your opportunity to share your campus lighting and safety concerns with us. For over 20 years, Environment, Health & Safety and UC San Diego Police Department, in partnership with CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center, have conducted the Annual Campus Lighting & Safety Survey Walks. During these walks, we assess for lighting outages and sufficient illumination throughout the campus as well as collect and report on other potential safety hazards and concerns. The Lighting & Safety Review is one of the many ongoing safety efforts implemented on campus annually. This year, the Annual Lighting & Safety Review Walks will take place on the evenings of May 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. Recommendations for improvements collected on these walks can include new lighting fixtures, pathway trip hazard repairs, cutting/trimming trees and shrubs, among many others. As the campus has grown, our walks have expanded. We now have four separate zones of focus, which target specific areas:

- Coast, Mesa, One Miramar St., La Jolla Del Sol, Mesa Nueva & Nuevo East & West – May 24
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography – May 24
- Residential Housing on Main Campus – May 25
- Main Campus buildings, including School of Medicine – May 25

Representatives from the following campus departments participate in the walks: CARE at SARC, EH&S, Associated Students, GPSA, UCPD, Transportation Services, Facilities Management, Residential Life, Housing*Dining*Hospitality, Campus Planning and UC San Diego Libraries. We encourage volunteers from the entire UC San Diego community to participate as well.
If you are aware of any areas of concern and/or would like to participate in the Lighting Walks, please email: campuslightingconcerns@ucsd.edu. We encourage everyone interested to attend! We ask that all concerns include specific information about the location, such as light pole identifier or number, intersections or cross streets as well as adjacent or specific building names. Please note that the walks only address exterior concerns. We review all submitted comments during the walks.
Throughout the year, if you have lighting concerns, you can (1) call the Facilities Management Customer Relations help desk at (858) 534-2930, (2) submit an online work request through the Facilities Management website (https://blink.ucsd.edu/facilities/management/request.html) or (3) email the information to campuslightingconcerns@ucsd.edu.
Thank you and we look forward to helping make the university a safer place for everyone.
