Symposium on Enhancing the Experiences of Students of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern Descent: June 15–16, 2022

We invite you to build on the equity, diversity, and inclusion programs we are collectively engaged in to enhance our Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern student experiences and attend the inaugural Symposium on Enhancing the Experiences of Students of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern Descent. The goals of the symposium are to increase awareness and understanding of the diverse experiences of students of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern descent at UC San Diego, and to foster intentional and sustained action that will enhance their experience and promote success and well-being. The symposium will occur on June 15 and 16, 2022.  It will provide a tracked learning opportunity for faculty and staff consisting of workshops and lectures. Each day will focus on how to create environments that best support our Asian, Pacific Islander, and Middle Eastern students in their pursuit of holistic success at UC San Diego.

The symposium is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.  Registration for the symposium is open through June 10, 2022.  Please visit the symposium registration page to be part of this important work.

Presenting at the symposium will be Christina W. Yao, Associate Professor of Higher Education at the University of South Carolina. She is a qualitative researcher who studies undergraduate and graduate student engagement and learning in higher education. She has published works on international students of color at U.S. universities. Also presenting will be Dr. Mike Hoa Nguyen, Assistant Professor at the University of Denver's Morgridge College of Education and faculty affiliate at the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy and the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for the Study of (In)Equality (IRISE). He aims to better articulate how race-conscious federal policy can reach its potential, and fulfill its promise to address pervasive educational inequalities for underserved and underrepresented populations and regions within the U.S.

In recognition of this event, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved for employees to attend. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of such leave when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.

Thank you for your commitment to creating and advancing an inclusive, affirming, student centered living and learning environment. We look forward to your continued involvement.
