It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Steven R. Garfin, MD, as Interim Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (VCHS), effective July 1, 2022.
As Interim Vice Chancellor, Dr. Garfin will focus on maintaining the overarching strategy for all of Health Sciences, working with the academic and Health System leadership on expanding UC San Diego Health’s clinical enterprise, fostering research collaborations and enhancing educational opportunities. Health Sciences includes the School of Medicine, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, and UC San Diego Health.
UC San Diego is currently conducting an international search for a Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences. Dr. Garfin’s interim vice chancellor appointment will continue until a permanent vice chancellor is recruited.
Dr. Garfin will retain his current role as Interim Dean of the School of Medicine. We will start the search for the Dean of School of Medicine after the appointment of VCHS has been finalized.
An internationally recognized leader in academic orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Garfin joined UC San Diego School of Medicine in 1981 and served as Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 1997 to 2018. He has been an important, influential contributor to our ongoing achievement and success at UC San Diego through his leadership, administrative skills and clinical accomplishments.
