We are pleased to announce the appointment of Lamine Secka as Chief of Police for the UC San Diego Police Department, effective August 1, 2022.
Lamine is a veteran law enforcement officer with more than 27 years of experience. He began his career in public service as a Community Service Officer and police dispatcher with the UC San Diego Police Department while he was a student at Warren College. A first-generation college student, Lamine earned his Bachelor's in Communications from UC San Diego and a Master's in Homeland Security from San Diego State University (SDSU), where he is now an adjunct faculty member for the Homeland Security Program. He also attended the FBI National Academy (Class 242) where he completed the Criminal Justice certification through the University of Virginia.
Lamine’s experience includes all police ranks at multiple agencies including UC San Diego, UC Irvine, the San Diego Police Department, SDSU and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). For the past nine years, Lamine has served as Chief of Police at SDSU and CSUSM and as Director of Emergency Management/Clery at SDSU.
His notable accomplishments include the development of a Campus Safety Training Series at no cost to students, faculty and staff; development of the A.L.I.C.E Active Shooter Response Training Program; and the development of the Motorcycle Program and the K-9 Program. Lamine partnered with the San Diego City Attorney in “Community Court” to provide alternatives for minor legal violations. In his role as Chief of Police at CSUSM, Lamine started a police Community Engagement Group, where he connected representatives from cultural student associations, faculty and staff associations, and the Office of Inclusive Excellence to establish a direct line of communication with campus stakeholders with the goal to ensure equitable access to safety services across the campus and greater community.
As the chief of the UC San Diego Police Department, Lamine will lead one of the most technologically advanced institutional agencies in California. He will be responsible for overseeing all police functions for the campus; ensuring programmatic alignment and compliance with the UC Presidential Campus Safety Plan; directing and managing strategic and tactical responses to campus emergencies; ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local emergency management requirements; and advocating cooperative and collaborative partnerships with students, staff, faculty and visitors in support of the university mission.
Please join us in congratulating Chief Secka on his appointment and welcoming him back to UC San Diego.
