As many of you know, the U.S. Department of Education is requiring all universities to certify whether students have commenced academic activities, a practice that began in summer 2022. Over the past year, UC San Diego’s administration, Senate, and faculty jointly created a straightforward way for instructors to make the certification. Fulfilling this requirement is mandatory in order for our students to receive their federal financial aid. We are writing to remind you of this requirement and to ask that you please verify academic activity by Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, using the method at the link above.
For instructors who were involved in this effort over the summer, thank you for your assistance verifying your students’ Commencement of Academic Activity (CAA). Your efforts have had a tremendous positive impact on our students, and looking ahead, we will continue this effort every quarter moving forward.
During summer 2022, 13,694 students were certified in 1,244 course sections, and a total of $34 million in Federal TIV Aid was offered. Your dedication to this documentation effort helped make this possible, as documenting commencement of students’ academic activity has a direct impact on the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office receiving funds to disburse to students as part of their financial aid packages.
This fall, an estimated 41,852 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled for fall quarter in approximately 7,500 class sections, making the impact to students even greater this term. For the 2022-2023 academic year, instructor attention to this requirement will make it possible for the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office to disburse approximately $370 million in federal financial aid.
As fall quarter gets underway, we again ask all UC San Diego instructors to please verify academic activity using the same method outlined over the summer by a deadline of Friday, Oct. 7, 2022. Please utilize the Instructor FAQ for any questions you may have and/or share the Student FAQ with your students.
Thank you again for your continued support and cooperation in this process. Your students will be most grateful for this assistance in receiving their financial aid.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth H. Simmons Executive Vice Chancellor
