Resource Management and Planning would like to thank everyone for their efforts and understanding this week in helping the campus get through this extended heat wave. With your help and support in reducing electric consumption and cooling requirements, we were able to replenish our chilled water system thermal storage and as a result, the campus cooling load shed measures are no longer required. The campus has returned to normal campus cooling operating procedures.
During this time, the campus has also been supporting the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) calls for energy conservation and increased energy production, which started on Wednesday, August 31 and will continue through today, by operating our emergency generators to supplement the local grid with as much as 14 MW of electricity.
We would also like to note that in response to expected rain and wind from Hurricane Kay, Facilities Management implemented its Storm Weather Protocols and has been preparing our campus and buildings for any inclement weather associated with this storm. This includes clearing all drainage culverts, stormwater intakes and roof drains, installing fresh straw waddles in key areas and adding sand bags at identified campus building entrances with extra bags prepositioned and ready to deploy if needed. Facilities Management will have staff onsite and available throughout the storm to remove fallen limbs, clear debris, remediate water, restore power loss, etc.
Facilities Management would like to thank the dedicated Central Utility Plant team and its employees for everything that they have done this week to keep the campus operating safely and all that they continue to do to support our students, staff, faculty, researchers and the public. These employees include the Customer Relations team who take hundreds of calls a day and ensure that the right folks respond, landscape staff, plumbers, roofers and others who are keeping drains and roofs clear, HVAC techs, building watch teams, custodians, maintenance staff and so many more key support staff who work behind the scenes to keep the campus running. Thank you all for your continued amazing efforts to support our campus community!
