2023-2025 COVID Career Support Program (CCSP)

To help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the scholarly trajectory of faculty at the Assistant Professor or Assistant Teaching Professor rank during academic year 20-21 and/or 21-22, we are pleased to announce a temporary program creating a one-time opportunity for eligible faculty to apply for teaching relief.  We recognize that faculty all across the university put forth extraordinary effort in order to sustain our community during the pandemic; the Covid Career Support Program (CCSP) is an initiative that offers targeted support to our most vulnerable junior faculty as they seek to fully reengage with their research and creative activity.

The Senate Administration Workgroup on Academic Advancement in the Wake of COVID-19 has reconvened and continues to actively assess the impacts of COVID on faculty career progress. The CCSP represents one response, with additional recommendations forthcoming based on committee review of UC San Diego’s current programs and outcomes as data becomes available.

Program Description

$9,000 reimbursement to the department for course teaching relief to be used between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2025.

Assistant Teaching Professors may opt to request instead an equivalent amount in support of professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, including creative activity.

Eligibility

Eligible faculty are current Assistant Professors (LRF) and Assistant Teaching Professors (LPSOE) who were Pre-tenure, Pre-Security of employment in the 2020-2021 and/or 2021-2022 academic years.

Program Terms
  • Department Chairs and School Deans must endorse each request.
  • Course relief must be taken by June 30, 2025.  If a teaching faculty member elects the equivalent funding, it must be used between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2025.
  • CCSP Awards are given on a one-time basis and will be applied to one quarter within the specified program dates.  Multiple award requests will not be approved.
  • A CCSP award does not relieve the awardee of other department responsibilities and University service. The CCSP is an in-residence program, and the award of a CCSP does not confer a leave of absence.
  • No faculty member may simultaneously use CCSP, CCMD and policy-based ASMD or exceptions to APM 710 for course release in the same quarter
  • The total amount of combined CCSP, ASMD, CCMD and APM 710 exceptions may not exceed two quarters during any one academic year, excluding the ASMD child-bearing provision which allows up to three quarters of modified duties for the child-bearing appointee. (The COVID Care Modified Duties Program (CCMD) ends June 30, 2023.)
