The 2020 Academics@UCSD Survey Summary Report
| |
In May 2020, the Offices of the Executive Vice Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion partnered with the Office for Organizational and Strategic Initiatives (OSI) to conduct the inaugural Academics@UCSD™ Survey. The purpose of the survey — which was designed with faculty input for General Campus and SIO — is to better understand and improve the experiences of Academic employees at UC San Diego, including faculty, researchers, academic coordinators, and librarians. After a lengthy and in-depth review process, we are excited to share a final summary report, which details the survey analysis, findings, and recommendations.
Covering several dimensions of academic work life, the survey asked questions related to academic welfare; department values, culture, and effectiveness; equity, diversity and inclusion; interpersonal behaviors; reward structures; and satisfaction with UC San Diego. Given the overlapping timeline of the survey with the COVID-19 pandemic, a series of 6 questions — 5 quantitative and one open-ended — related to the impact of the pandemic on academic appointees was included at the end of the survey. The survey closed on June 1, 2020, with a 44 percent response rate.
The results were analyzed in two phases. Phase 1, led by OSI in partnership the Center for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion (C-FDI) and Institutional Research (IR), resulted in statistical reports for all schools, divisions, departments, and programs with 5 or more respondents. These unit-level reports and data were distributed in Fall 2020 and unit leaders were encouraged to share and discuss their results with their academic employees. A campuswide statistical report is accessible here.
Phase two of analysis, led by IR and C-FDI, included additional quantitative analyses and a qualitative research component that engaged academic employees and administrators in a multi-pronged sensemaking process. During winter and spring of 2021, academic employees were invited to participate in several roundtable discussions organized according to emergent themes and key findings. These conversations were used to gain a richer understanding of the results and to explore potential solutions. IR and C-FDI also consulted with key administrative units serving academic employees as well as the Academic Senate, to share findings and integrate broad perspectives around recommendations. These quantitative and qualitative findings have helped to inform strategic plans for inclusive excellence through the strategic accountability process.
We thank all the academic appointees who participated in the survey and the roundtable table discussions. We hope that the results demonstrate that we heard you and that we value your voice, research, and contributions to our campus. The next Academics@UCSD survey will be conducted in 2024 as part of an ongoing process to chart our institutional progress and continue to identify opportunities for improvement.
