UC San Diego Observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Today, UC San Diego observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day to honor the memory of the six million Jewish victims who lost their lives and millions of other victims of Nazism. While we take time to acknowledge and mourn the victims of that horrific moment in history, it is also important to reflect on the violent consequences of normalizing bigotry and antisemitism.
In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly established UN Resolution 60/7, which designated January 27th International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The resolution was established to designate an official date to commemorate the victims, promote worldwide Holocaust education, and to encourage the active preservation of Holocaust sites. Visit the United States Holocaust Museum’s website to learn more about the history and significance of the date.
UC San Diego unequivocally condemns all forms of hatred, bigotry and discrimination. We are proud that our campus is home to a unique community with diverse cultures, identities and experiences, which help us cultivate an environment where everyone has the opportunity to engage with perspectives different from their own.
Recently, nationally and internationally, we have witnessed an alarming increase of antisemitic attitudes and behaviors, as well as other forms of bigotry. We encourage our community members to learn about the history of violence against Jewish people, and to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day by committing to standing up against any and all forms of discrimination and hate.
To learn more about the Holocaust and to hear from survivors, witnesses, relatives and scholars, visit UC San Diego’s Holocaust Living History Workshop, a collaboration between the UC San Diego Library and the Jewish Studies Program. This year’s theme is “Rethinking Genocide: Fascism, Exploitation and the Holocaust.”
