All students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a series of events throughout the month of February in observance and celebration of Black History Month. This year’s theme is “Black Resistance, The Work Toward Freedom Continues.”
Numerous events will be held, including UC San Diego’s 21st Annual Black History Month Celebration and Scholarship Awards Ceremony. This celebration will feature a keynote speech from Dr. Mary Frances Berry, a renowned educator, author, lawyer and longtime activist for civil rights and freedom; as well as recognition of student scholars at UC San Diego.
In recognition of this annual event, two hours of administrative leave with pay have been approved for employees to attend a UC San Diego Black History Month activity. Supervisors, upon request, may approve the use of such leave when the absence does not infringe upon the performance of required job duties or patient care.
On behalf of the campus community, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the members of the UC San Diego Black History Month Planning Committee for their work to coordinate these educational and celebratory campus activities.
