Dear UC San Diego Community,
On Feb. 8, 2023, UC San Diego will officially launch the Triton CORE pilot, a student-centered mobile crisis response team staffed by mental health providers from Student Health and Well-Being who will respond to non-violent student mental health crises on campus. Interventions provided by this team will be grounded in equity, social justice, and compassionate, trauma-informed care.
The pilot will initially be available one day per week, and by Spring Quarter 2023, Triton CORE will expand its service to provide multi-day and multi-evening coverage. This pilot period will allow the team to further refine Triton CORE’s capabilities as the team scales its coverage.
What will Triton CORE do?
This team of mental health professionals will deploy on-site to deliver clinical interventions within a safe therapeutic environment, to assist in the de-escalation and stabilization of individuals experiencing a behavioral/mental health crisis or substance use impairment. As part of UC San Diego’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Triton CORE will coordinate efforts with Student Affairs’ campus-based initiatives, UC San Diego Health supports (including the College Mental Health Program), as well as San Diego County mental health resources as needed to ensure a continuum of interventions at the appropriate level of care.
In addition to mobile crisis response services, Triton CORE will provide psycho-education and training to faculty, staff, administrators, and student leaders to better understand how to respond to students in need.
Triton CORE will support students requiring a higher level of care. By using a person-centered and anti-oppressive approach, Triton CORE will prevent non-consensual mental health engagement, and will support continued efforts to decriminalize behavioral health crises.
Our collaborative approach aligns with the unique needs of our campus community, ensuring that Triton CORE is an integral component in breaking down barriers to facilitate access to basic needs and systems of mental health care on campus and in the surrounding San Diego community.
Be well,
