I am pleased to announce two promotions within VC EDI: Gerardo Arellano, Ph.D., as Executive Director of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives at UC San Diego, and Shaun Travers, Ed.D. as Executive Director of Learning and Professional Development for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
Gerardo Arellano has served as the inaugural Director of the Raza Resource Centro (RRC) since 2014, providing leadership to the campus community with an emphasis on meeting the unique needs of Latinx/Chicanx students. His new role will expand his leadership to include overseeing the campus’ HSI strategy to achieve HSI designation through student servingness. He will help UC San Diego reach this significant milestone through a collective impact approach to the implementation of the 2022 HSI Task Force recommendations, strengthening the campus’ ability to support our diverse students, staff, and faculty through systemic changes, expanded community partnership, and the ongoing integration of HSI scholarly research into UC San Diego’s practices, programs, and policies. He will continue to direct the Raza Resource Centro.
After 25 years of exemplary service as the inaugural director of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center (LGBT RC), Shaun Travers has been promoted to the Executive Director of Learning and Professional Development for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
In this role he will design, develop, implement, and evaluate ongoing EDI training and education on behalf of my office. In collaboration with units across UC San Diego, he will initiate, implement, and assess educational programming, and professional development to improve employee understanding and adoption of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and practices. This will include consulting with campus-wide partners to advance the core tenets of our Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence. His work will align with campus-wide goals, Human Resources’ People Proposition, and existing EDI programs and initiatives. Maribel Gomez, M.A., will serve as Interim Director of the LGBT RC. She has served as Assistant Director and Center Manager for more than a decade.
Join me in congratulating Gerardo Arellano and Shaun Travers.
