Every November, UC San Diego celebrates the rich cultures, traditions and histories of Native people, and recognizes the important contributions they continue to make on our campus and in our community. All faculty, staff and students are invited to take part in Native American Heritage Month, which includes a kickoff event, film screenings, craft workshop, student-initiated programs, and more.
UC San Diego’s 17th annual Native American Heritage Month kickoff event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Price Center West Ballroom. This event will feature keynote speaker, Ryan RedCorn (Osage) – a filmmaker, screenwriter, photographer and graphic designer. Osage is also the co-founder of the Indigenous sketch comedy group, The 1491s, and Buffalo Nickel Creative ad agency. Osage will present “Irreverent Representations,'' and discuss his experiences in the industry, including his work as a screenwriter on FX’s Reservation Dogs, and his role as the director of the 2023 film, Dead Birds Hearts. The event will also include live performances by Blue Eagle Vigil (Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians), the Green River Singers, and Soaring Eagles Native American dancers. The 2023-24 Inaugural Native American and Indigenous Studies Program, Culture Bearer-In-Residence, Ethan L. Banegas (Kumeyaay, Payómkawichum, and Kuupangaxwichem), will also be in attendance, supporting the minor and doctoral certificate in Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS), and the work of the Intertribal Resource Center (ITRC).
Thank you to the members of the Native American Heritage Month Planning Committee for their valuable time in coordinating these educational and commemorative events.
