The UC San Diego Police Department would like to remind our campus community to be conscious of personal safety and to secure personal property, residences and offices this holiday season. The holiday season often comes with an increase in property crimes on campus. The UC San Diego Police Department recommends the following safety measures:
- Make sure residence doors and windows are closed and locked. If you must open a window, use a lock or item which only allows the window to open small distances.
- If you live on campus and your windows or doors won’t lock, please call Housing Maintenance at (858) 534-2600.
- If your office windows or doors won’t lock, please call Facilities Management. Visit https://hdhfacilities.ucsd.edu/
- Do not leave valuables or gifts in vehicles. Take extra care to safeguard your property.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you see suspicious activity, call or text the UC San Diego Police Department immediately at 9-1-1.
- Know the location of campus emergency telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
- Use the CSO Safety Escort Program for a safe walk on campus during the hours of darkness by calling (858) 534-9255.
- Avoid displaying and/or placing high value items close to windows. Items such as laptops, cell phones, wallets, and purses can be easily grabbed from open windows and may be incentives for criminals to try and enter the residence. Take these items with you if you will be leaving for holiday breaks.
- If leaving for the break, unplug or turn off electronic devices such as decorative lights, heaters or other unattended electronics.
- Be alert and aware. Pay full attention to who is around when you leave and return to your residence or office. If returning at night, leave a light on inside as a visual deterrent.
- Be aware of your suitemates’ holiday schedules to know who will be in and out of the residence.
If you are the victim of a burglary or you discover someone inside your residence:
- If possible, immediately leave your residence and go to a safe area (e.g., a neighbor’s apartment or a public place).
- Call or text the UC San Diego Police Department at 9-1-1.
- If you are unable to leave your residence, secure yourself and family members in a safe location, turn on all available lights, and call the police immediately.
