It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Edward P. Junkins, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.A.P., as the new Executive Director of Student Health and Well-Being, effective January 8, 2024.

Reporting to Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health, Dr. Junkins will lead these teams under a shared vision to build the nation’s most innovative, inclusive and effective Student Health and Well-Being Services.
Dr. Junkins comes to UC San Diego from UC Berkeley, where he was the Associate Medical Director for University Health Services (UHS). As an academic clinician educator, clinical researcher, and executive administrator for more than two decades, he has provided consultation and medical expertise for senior leadership within large institutions, as well as led and developed management teams to advance clinical services. Dr. Junkins has supervised Primary and Urgent Care, Women’s Health, Eating Disorders, Behavioral Health, and Sports Medicine, and his responsibilities included pharmacy, laboratory and radiological services, physical therapy and student insurance. His innovative collaborations with fellow directors across health and wellness departments have directly benefited patients, students, faculty and staff.
Among his first priorities, Dr. Junkins will focus on continuing to integrate and expand clinical and mental health services for our diverse graduate, professional and undergraduate students, including improved access and expansion of clinical services, outreach efforts and educational opportunities. Partnering with UC San Diego Health, students will be afforded comprehensive, effective and safe care of the highest quality. In addition, Dr. Junkins will oversee the ongoing development of services within the Triton Center, the development of a student mental health app, and work with external parties, government relations and philanthropists to obtain additional external funding. To enhance strategic student-centered health and well-being collaborations, Dr. Junkins also serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team.
With deep appreciation, we recognize and thank Stacie San Miguel, MD for serving as Interim Executive Director and providing strong and consistent leadership to all services. Dr. San Miguel did an outstanding job leading Student Health and Well-Being; we are grateful for her leadership and dedication. Dr. San Miguel will continue to lead student health services in partnership with Dr. Junkins and the outstanding leadership team of Student Health and Well-Being.
UC San Diego Student Health and Well-Being offers campus-based health services to enrolled students with an annual volume of approximately 85,000 visits, including primary, urgent and preventive, mental health, plus optometry, vaccinations, radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services. The center is accredited by both the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and the International Accreditation of Counseling Services.
We look forward to Dr. Junkins joining the UC San Diego leadership team and supporting him in future initiatives to expand and sustain the systems and services that best support our students.
