On 02-16-2023 at 8:57 am, the UC San Diego Police Department received a report of an attempted robbery that occurred at UC San Diego Medical - Hillcrest Arbor Parking Structure at 7:50 am. The reporting party, a staff member, stated that an unknown male approached them with a metal object and demanded the staff member's lunch. The staff member told him no, and the unknown male walked away.
- The suspect is described by the reporting party as a male, approximately 25-35 years old, 5'9" with black hair in a short ponytail with unshaven facial hair. The male was last seen wearing disheveled dark clothing and stud earrings and was heard talking to himself as he walked away.
- At this time, the suspect is not in custody.

- Your personal safety is more important than money or merchandise.
- Believe the robber if they say they have a gun, knife, or other weapons.
- Try to maintain a calm demeanor. Don’t make sudden moves or try to apprehend the suspect yourself. Concentrate on remembering a description of the suspect and when safe to do so, call or text the police immediately at 9-1-1.
- Assess the situation. Remember every situation is different; you are the only one who can decide the appropriate course of action.
- Seek medical attention as required.

To help reduce the risk of being the victim of a robbery:
- Report suspicious activity immediately to the UC San Diego Police Department by calling or texting 9-1-1.
- Think ahead. Thinking about your options ahead of time, and discussing them with others may help you make quick decisions under difficult circumstances.
- Call the UC San Diego Medical Center Security at (619) 543-3762 for medical center escorts, or CSO Escort at (858) 534-WALK while on the main campus, available daily from dusk to dawn.
- Whenever possible, travel well-lit, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas. Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door. Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money in public. Only carry the credit cards you need.
- Be careful with purses or wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. A purse snatcher could injure you. Keep wallets in an inside pocket.
- When using an ATM, have your ATM card ready and in your hand, as you approach the ATM. Be careful that no one can see you entering your pin and do not count or visually display any money you received from the ATM.
- Know the location of Campus Emergency Telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
