UPDATE, ARREST MADE from Timely Warning - Robbery Posted 02/21/2023

On 02/28/2023, as a result of information provided by members of our community, a person was arrested and charged with robbery in connection with the Timely Warning – Robbery sent on 02/21/2023. The UC San Diego Police Department believes this person was solely responsible for the robbery and no additional suspects are outstanding. The UC San Diego Police Department is appreciative of the community’s assistance with this investigation.

Timely Warning – Robbery

On 02/21/2023, at approximately 7:16 pm, the UC San Diego Police Department received a report of a robbery that occurred on Library Walk near The Trove (adjacent to the Price Center) at approximately 7:00 pm. The victim stated that the suspect approached and demanded the victim’s jacket and gloves while threatening to inflict physical harm upon the victim. Fearing for his safety, the victim surrendered his gloves, but kept his jacket before leaving to a place of safety. The victim obtained a photo of the suspect at the time of this incident (see below):

The suspect is described by the victim as a male, approximately 5’-6” tall with a thin build, approximately 5’-6” tall in his mid-20’s, with curly long hair. He left the area in an unknown direction of travel.
He was last seen wearing a black ball cap with a red symbol, a purple scarf around the back of his head and neck, blue headphone around his neck, a black and white checkered fanny pack across his chest, a black long-sleeve sweatshirt, khaki pants and dark sneakers. He also had a backpack with black straps on his back and was carrying a multi-colored paper bag.
The report is currently under investigation by the UC San Diego Police Department.

If you are a victim of a robbery:

Your personal safety is more important than money or merchandise.
Believe the robber if they say they have a gun, knife or other weapon.
Try to maintain a calm demeanor. Don’t make sudden moves or try to apprehend the suspect yourself. Concentrate on remembering a description of the suspect and when safe to do so, call police immediately by dialing 9-1-1.
Assess the situation. Remember every situation is different; you are the only one who can decide the appropriate course of action.
Seek medical attention as required.

To help reduce the risk of being the victim of a robbery:

Report suspicious activity immediately to the UC San Diego Police Department by calling 9-1-1.
Think ahead. Thinking about your options ahead of time and discussing them with others may help you make quick decisions under difficult circumstances.
Use the UC San Diego Safety Escort Program. Call (858) 534-WALK, available daily from dusk to dawn.
Whenever possible, travel well-lit, busy routes. Avoid walking or parking in shadowed areas. Have your keys in your hand as you approach your door.
Avoid displaying and carrying large sums of money in public. Only carry the credit cards you need.
Be careful with purses or wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, but do not loop or wrap straps around you. A purse snatcher could injure you. Keep wallets in an inside pocket.
When using an ATM, have your ATM card ready and in your hand as you approach the ATM. Be careful that no one can see you entering your pin and do not count or visually display any money you received from the ATM.
Know the location of Campus Emergency Telephones on routes to and from campus destinations.
