Following nearly 33 years of exceptional service to UC San Diego, Marlene Shaver has announced that she will retire from the university by June 30, 2023.
Marlene serves as Chief Financial Officer for the UC San Diego Foundation, the nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation which manages charitable gifts made to UC San Diego. Under her leadership, the UC San Diego Foundation manages assets totaling approximately $1.6 billion, which includes $1.4 billion in endowed funds, as well as the operating office for the financial, governance, corporate and board operations. The Foundation Board of Trustees consists of 50 prominent alumni, donor and community partners. She has worked with hundreds of dedicated board trustees who have volunteered their time and expertise to guiding the UC San Diego Foundation through the years. During her time with UC San Diego, the Foundation’s endowment has grown from less than $20 million when she first started in June 1990 to approximately $1.4 billion as of January 2023. She had a leadership role in two successful fundraising campaigns, including the 10-year Campaign for UC San Diego, which concluded in June 2022 reaching $3.05 billion in total funds raised.
As Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement Services, her team oversees all gift policy, gift processing, gift/fund stewardship and gift accounting for the campus and the Foundation. She has developed strong relationships not only with donors and donor representatives, but worked across all the academic units alongside many faculty leaders and development officers to successfully advise and negotiate many of our most significant gifts for the benefit of the campus. She has provided strong leadership and management oversight of critical functions including financial and investment operations for charitable gifts, was the creator of an annual endowment reporting for donors that has been copied by many institutions, and has formulated polices and processes to help us better steward our gifts.
Please join me in offering our sincerest appreciation to Associate Vice Chancellor Marlene Shaver for her exemplary service to UC San Diego and in wishing her well in her retirement and future endeavors. She is a highly respected and valued colleague, advisor, and mentor to many across the campus and will be deeply missed. A search for Marlene’s successor will begin promptly.
