We are pleased to announce the reappointment of Leslie Carver as Provost of Thurgood Marshall College (TMC), effective July 1, 2021, following her positive administrative review. This notice is retroactive to the above date.
We thank the Thurgood Marshall Provost five-year review committee and its chair, Professor Gedeon Deak, for its service in conducting a comprehensive review. The committee members noted that Provost Carver is viewed as an effective communicator who routinely seeks broad input from students and her provost colleagues. Her engagement with student success programs and with the TMC student government were noted as particularly laudatory contributions, as was her work in creating safe spaces for students from diverse backgrounds to converse about matters of race and social justice. During a global pandemic, she was responsible for the planning and execution of a meaningful series of virtual events to commemorate the 50th anniversary celebration of the college, and performed impactful work in highlighting its mission and history. The committee praised Provost Carver’s strong leadership during exceptionally challenging circumstances and unanimously recommended her reappointment.
Throughout her last review period, Provost Carver oversaw several initiatives that contributed to TMC’s overall success and academic goals. Following the hiring of a new Dimensions of Culture (DOC) director, she oversaw a revision of the college’s DOC curriculum, an important three-quarter sequence at the core of TMC’s general education requirements. She analyzed the college’s Film Studies minor and collaborated to find it a new home where it would be better enrolled and intellectually supported under the Arts and Humanities division, as well as examining other minors offered by the college and determining which should be appropriate targets of growth. Provost Carver’s clear vision regarding what would benefit TMC students and its curriculum was impressive, but particularly impressive was her leadership in conceptualizing and implementing the TRELS (Triton Research & Experiential Learning Scholars) program, which provides research funding and study abroad funding for students.
Further, with regard to budgetary stewardship, Provost Carver’s effective strategies for addressing budgetary constraints and collaborative work with fellow Provosts was deeply appreciated and praised by her colleagues.
Please join us in recognizing Provost Carver for her many accomplishments and continued service. We look forward to her continued leadership and student-centered enhancements of its programs for both Thurgood Marshall College and the greater campus community.
